My bet

So I think that I'm going to lose my bet with Den. Yeah, I'm losing! I've been kind of slow to report back on this one because I really didn't know if this would help him. A few weeks ago we went to the WI state fair. It was fun and because I'm feeling better I was able to walk it for hours. As with any fair, it's nothing more than fried food, oddly dressed individuals, and an infomercial rolled into one. And we were sucked in. But it worked out in our favor, when have you ever heard me say that! We were in the main building just checking out all of the neat things for sale and we found a booth selling electronic cigarettes. And it was Den that wanted to stop and listen. I usually keep a safe distance and just look without being close enough to feel pressured to buy. Or getting sucked into the vortex of the sales pitch. But who would have guessed that I would have been the one pushing for the sale. Now mind you, I told Den it was up to him. And I could tell as we stood there listening to the pitch that he was contemplating his future, the suffering of quitting and wondering if he was going to end up like his grandparents with emphysema. So we bit. It was $110 for the "fake" cigarette. Clutching my chest, I watched Den charge it. But I still thought that it was a good idea if he would use it.
The white part is a battery(the tip even lights up when you use it) and the butt has water and nicotine with some flavor in it. Instead of going for a smoke, he goes for a steam. And it seems to be working! The butts are $2 each and he is going through about one a day so it is half as much as smoking and it won't do any damage to his lungs. But the deal was that he completely quits. He said that he is going to be completely weened by the end of the year. As with every other small detail in my life, I'll keep you posted.

Helpful Hint

When we redid DJ's room, we had to move all the furniture out twice. We painted and then put it all back together because it was such a long wait for the carpet. And then we had to do it all over again when the carpet came. Anyways, Anna had an old roll up sled. You know the kind that rerolls itself on the way down the hill. Well, I finally found a good use for it cuz it really doesn't work if you want to sled. Slip it under your furniture and pull. It slides so easily on carpet. And what made it even better was the fact that I made DJ pull it all. So is the helpful hint the sled or making your kids do all the work?

What is wrong with people?

And this is going to be a small rant. Anna got a job at a clothing store. So she can now pay for the increase in our car insurance and it will help keep her even more busy. Between needing to stay on the honor roll, tennis, basketball, track, cleaning her great grandfather's house and work, I think she should have plenty to do. So anywho, she got a job at a mall that is about a hour from our house. The reason that she had to go so far from home was because there really isn't anything around here. Most of the part time jobs, you need to know someone to get hired. And trust me, we looked. The clothing store has been pretty good about giving her enough hours in one shift so its not a complete waste of gas and her time. We are going to fill her car twice a month and beyond that she can put gas in it or push(lovingly said). The only problem is you have to drive all the way out there to find out your schedule, they don't want you to call. UGH! So it will waste 2 gallons of gas and over 2 hours of her time that she really needs for homework. Being me, I want to get involved and "fix" this. My fixing it would probably be to point out how stupid this is so I'm staying out of it. (I wonder how long she would keep her job if I help her?) I need to learn that I don't have to control everything. The only thing that I have asked is that she adds her work schedule to our main calendar so all of our plans mesh. But I've found that I'm having a slight problem of letting go. I have always done everything and now she really doesn't need me as much so it feels kind of odd. As you all know, I'm a tad bit bossy but I think it comes with the territory. I can't even imagine the chaos if no one was in charge.
Anyways, back to my rant. The manager doesn't want to girls to call in because there are over 30 employees at the store and she doesn't want to be on the phone all day. This I understand but why not post it on the Internet or something? I suggested that Anna talk to one of the girls that lives close to the mall and have her call with her schedule. And then just take her out to lunch or give her a couple of bucks every so often. Why not do things that make sense? But I should just shut up and let her figure it out. So is this a rant about her job or me?

Making more work for us!

So this is a picture of the new carpet meeting up with our old carpet in DJ's doorway. The new carpet is great so nice and fluffy. The old carpet is old, worn, and flat. The new carpet and freshly redone room is making the rest of the house look like crap. And we can all see where this is headed.
This time we didn't order though Empire like we did for the rest of the house, we went through Home Depot. They both have their good points and their weaknesses. Empire will install your carpet the next day and they have always been true to their word. So its nice to only have your house torn up for a day or two. The problem is they are more expensive for a lower grade of carpet. Home Depot is cheaper and you get a better grade of carpet for your money but it takes them forever. You order the carpet from the store and then another company takes over and you have to deal with them. They were very professional but they drag it out. They call, then send someone out to measure, then call to tell you they will call when your carpet is in. Then they call and tell you it is in. Then they have to call back when they can set up a time to install it. It took two weeks to finally get it installed and a ton of calls. The guys that installed it were very professional and polite so that earned them a ton of points. So over all I would have to say that I would use Home Depot again. It was more of a pain but DJ's carpet will last a lot longer because we were able to upgrade. So I guess that money once again wins out over my time and a messy house. The only problem is DJ's room is making the rest of the house look run down. I think I will just keep his door closed until we can get new carpet for the hall. And maybe paint and maybe get new trim and maybe...........

A New Project

My dream is to one day pack up and move far away from this house. I believe this house hates us. Pretty much since we have moved in, it has tried to fall apart. I'm pretty sure that if we hadn't fought desperately to save this house, it would have been sucked into another dimension just like at the end of Poltergeist. This house is just old. And we bought it from a family that sold us a lemon. They knew it was falling apart and just quickly patched it up and sold it to us. I know that all houses have problems but this one is trying to get us or our pocket book. The house is over 25 years old now so everything needs to be redone. The only problem is we just never have enough cash to do it all. I would love to gut this house but there is just no way. So anywho, I opened the garage door and it fell off of the track. And the really cool part was the cars were still in the garage. So we are going to be installing a new door. Den managed to get it back on the track so we are hoping that we will get a few more weeks out of it before we send it off to garage door heaven. I'll keep you posted.

Dude Check out my Crack

And I bet you thought I was going to be a bit naughty. Not so, not so. This is the crack right next to my garden. Remember how I was saying that my MIL Donna could grow anything, it's rubbing off just a bit. My garden is now spilling out of the garden and is now growing in the cracks of the driveway.
This was how my neat and tidy little garden looked at the beginning of the summer. And now.........

It's no longer neat and tidy, it's a disaster. And I hate it when things look over grown and messy. If you look closely at the picture, I now have corn growing in my garden. I didn't even plant corn! So I have learned a few things from this year. Normally, my plants don't get much bigger than when I first plant them. So this little area was perfect for gardening. I don't know what happened but I'm a little concerned that it might take over like Audrey II. So my plan for next year is to move my garden somewhere else in the yard. And maybe just plant a couple of small things here next year.

Den's Little Business

Wouldn't be nice if we could all have our dream jobs? I would write all day and get paid for it. And Den would be a chef. He worked in a French restaurant for a few years when he was in high school. So we both kind of know what we are doing but at this point for both of us writing and cooking is just a hobby. But at least, we are still pursuing our dream just on a very small scale. Anyways, we are always on the look out to make an extra dollar. So he started making muffins for people at work. He is charging a $1 a muffin which I think is way too much. But he keeps saying that the ingredients alone are almost $.50 so he is right on track. They have 200 calories each so they are going over real well with the dieters. And Den said that gourmet bakeries sell muffins for $2-$4 a piece. I still think its high but they are selling well. It takes him a few hours to make a couple dozen so he is probably right about the price. I'd post the recipe but I think that it might be a trade secret. But here is something really close.
Anyways, if you are looking to make some extra cash, this is a thought. I think I might have another cleaning job so that will help too. I'm still feeling pretty good so I think I'm up to the challenge. And Anna is still working at the clothing store. It will be nice for all of us not to have the budget down to the wire. And it will be nice to have some fun money.

Our little problem

Den and I have a little bet/agreement going on at the moment and I really hope that I lose. Den joined a gym with our friend Steve. The deal is Den will quit smoking within the next six months in exchange for joining the gym. The only problem with this deal is for the next few months we will be paying for his smoking and the gym. And don't forget the insurance is going up thanks to Anna's little problem. I know that I said that Anna will be paying for her mistake and she will be. But on the off chance she can't pay it, we still have to cover the bills. I'm not telling her this, it's just between us. So I'm back to the budget. But I did manage to shave $15 off our Satellite bill. If you have satellite just call in the month of August and tell them that you are having a hard time financially and they will work with you. Also ask them for Cinemax for $.01. I'm a happy camper! So anyways, that will help and with all the line drying and being diligent about the gas and electricity, I've shaved some of our costs down. So the good news is, we can still pay the bills. I'm just a little concerned that Den will "forget" about our deal. I'll let you know how he does.

DJ'S room redo

For some reason, I think we look like nut jobs. We are not gun enthusiasts or enjoy hunting. In fact, we are quite the opposite. We bring in strays and try to save everything and everybody we can. But for some reason, our house doesn't reflect that. The few pictures I have posted make us look like all we love are guns and knives. Not so! Maybe I should post pictures of the rest of the house just to prove we aren't survivalists or something. But anyways, DJ's room is exactly the way that he wanted it. And so far all the men and boys that have seen it have gone crazy over it. Den and I just believe that it's paint and we can change it in a day. (Meaning Den will paint again) And we have redone Anna's room 6 times in 14 years. I just want them to grow up and have wonderful memories. All I will remember is painting and dreading the next idea Anna will have for her room! Anyways, here are the pictures. The only thing missing is the new carpet and it should be here in about a week. If you don't remember what his room looked like before click here. Oh and so you know that I haven't strayed from my cheap ways. Grandma Donna and Papa (my in laws) are paying for everything but the carpet. And DJ is paying for the carpet out of his savings.
And the good thing about this room is if he gets tired of it, we can just take the decorations out and everything else is neutral.
The camo netting is a cover for the couch. It folds down into a full sized bed. And the cover is a blanket.
The bullet holes are just window clingys. So they will come down without taking off the paint.
Those aren't real hand guns. They are pellet guns and they don't have the CO2 cartridges in them. And the rifle is a Mott family heirloom. It is real but hasn't worked in 20-30 years.

And that's a close up of the bullet holes. We are weird! But when he is grown, I hope that he will look back and smile.

Cards

It's so hard for me to keep everything organized with so many fingers rummaging threw drawers and cabinets. So I came up with an easy way to keep all the birthday and thank you cards organized. I keep everything in a basket that fits neatly on a top shelf in a cabinet. When I purchase a pack of thank you cards, I unwrap them and tuck each one in the flap of the envelope. That way no one has to find the matching envelope to their card. I also, keep a pen in there. So everything is together and it makes the chore (so say the kids) a little easier. We go through quite a bit of cards so I get them at the Dollar Store. This is cheap and easy(insert joke) so it's right up my alley!

Amish Bread with a Twist

I've been making Amish bread for about 3 years and I'm not kidding. But it does get old after a while and I'm alwasy looking for a way to change it up a bit. We usually don't eat it all so I freeze it and give it away as a thank you or a get well soon pick me up. I know, Awwwww how sweet. That's me just oozing with kindness. So anyways, here is the recipe for the starter and here is the recipe for the regular bread. And to change it up a bit chop up one apple and throw in 3/4 cup of walnut. It was amazing! Just don't forget to add a scoop of ice cream. See I'm not kidding when I say that I have an addiction problem!

Sort of Fixed

Alright, I think I have it figured out. Sort of! I'm not even getting into the fact that the woman is suing us for an accident that did NO damage to her car. Or the fact that the officer gave her a ticket and not Anna. Which in all fairness ANNA caused and should be punished for. I tried to point that out to the officer that she is to be held accountable for her actions. Which earned me a very weird look from the officer and the death glare from my husband. What? I know shut the hell up but still it is all her fault. The officer said that dealing with the woman that Anna hit would be punishment enough.
So anyways, the insurance company totaled the car. It was only worth $2441 but with the new paint job and the transmission it was worth quite a bit more to us. So the insurance company let us buy our car back from them. So we ended up with $1806.44 after they deducted everything. So then I just had to ask, "Well are you still going to insure a totaled car?" I know I should just shut up but I can't. And sure enough they will. Which I respond with, "well why would you want to do that. Isn't it totaled?" I know I get a lot of SHUT THE HELL ups. But I guess Illinois is one of the few states where the title is still clean even after you total it and you don't need an inspection to keep driving it. So again I continue with the stupid questions, "Why would you pay me and insure my totaled car?" I often get a lot of silence with people. So trying to help her I say, "What if the car isn't safe? Can you imagine what kind of cars people are driving?" Silence. So I finally followed her lead and shut my hole.
So Den took 2 days off and worked on the car. He bought parts from the junk yard for $316. The bumper that we thought needed to be replaced was just scratched and a magic eraser took off all of the scuffs. Who knew? So it has on little crack under the emblem that you can't see unless you are laying on the ground. So all we needed was a hood, two head lights and a new locking mechanism. And the hood was even white. And the kicker is if Den hadn't painted it, it would match but since he put a "glitter" in the paint, it made it a creamy white. So they don't match exactly but I really don't care. I thought she deserved and orange and green hood. So Den is going to use the left over money and buy the tools to start painting cars. He said he has the feeling that we may need to paint it a few times. I hope not.
If it's cloudy out, you can barely tell the difference.

I'm so glad that one small part of this problem is fixed. I asked our agent and he said that he thinks our insurance will be going up about 15%. So the extra $36 a month is now Anna's problem. And remember how she was having trouble finding a job. Well, two days after this she got a call back from one of the places she submitted an application to and was hired! Seems like someone was looking out for her!

Are you happy when school starts or ends?

I love my children I really do and this has nothing to do with loving them. But I will be glad when school starts. Never mind the car accident and redoing DJ's room and everything else that I've managed to block out. I swear one day you will find me in a dark corner rocking back and forth holding my head saying, "Find a happy place, find a happy place!"
Jessie our dear dog is old. And she had an accident in DJ's room. And the good news is he is getting new carpet so it's not that big of a deal. DJ was heading off to grandma Donna's and went in his room to pack. He threw his clothes on the floor and then knelt down. So yes, DJ and the clothes went in the poo. So what does he do? He walks into the bathroom scrapes it off of his knee with TP and slings it. Then takes all the poo clothes and grinds them into the clothes in the laundry basket. So I when I ask, "What have you DONE!" He turns to me all serious and says, "I'm having such a bad day!" It took me 3 hours to clean the carpet, disinfect the bathroom and scrub dog leavings out of all of the clothes.
So please take a moment and look to your right. Please vote. I just wanted to see if it was just me that can't wait for school to start.
