Healthy Eats

So in our quest to eat healthier, we tried Smart Ground.(No paid endorsement here!) And it didn't hurt that I had a $1 off coupon! I'm going to recommend this one. It was really good and it tastes exactly like ground hamburger with one exception there is no gristle. The only problem with this is, it is a bit more expensive than hamburger. The upside is you don't have to fry it just heat and eat.

And this is what the finished product looked like. I'm going to get a few of these and keep them around when we don't have a lot of time for dinner. This meal went together super quick and the kids didn't even know the difference.
Thanks for stopping by,
SonyaAnn

What is it? Is it Textured Vegetable Protein? I've used TVP before with good results in most dishes.

P.S. Hi!

My question too....WHAT is it?
Soy no doubt....

P.P.S.
Hi too!

Annie Jones-It's soy. You really can't tell the difference. Now the price on it just needs to come down.
Is TVP any good? Is it expensive?
P.S.S.-Hi

slugmama-It's soy.
Have you ever tried TVP? How do you cook it?

I had seen this and wondered if it was good. I have a hard time getting hubby and son to eat soy "meat."

Pam-It was really good, we bought it again. We didn't even tell the kids and they didn't notice at all. Maybe just try and sneak it in one meal. I couldn't tell the difference just make sure that it is served warm. The only problem is it is more expensive than hamburger. But since you don't have to cook it, it is great for the nights when you run out of time. SO it is a lot cheaper than fast food.
Have a great day.

ok, so how much more expen$ive than hamburger is it?
You might want to try ground chicken or turkey instead if you are looking for a bit cheaper(than your soy thingy) and healthier than red meat. Ground turkey can be had in rolls at the $1 store sometimes around here.
I think TVP IS soy. You cook it just like ground beef. I remember back when TVP was used in the grocery store to extend ground beef(mid '70's)....the packages with a mix of beef and TVP were cheaper than the straight ground beef packs. Now you pay extra for TVP! How times and outlooks change....lolol

If you like this particular brand try emailing them and get some coupons! That would bring the cost down for you at least...lol

slugmama-
Good idea about the coupons. Honestly, I would like to give up on a lot of the meat all together. But this is a nice change and you are right about the turkey rolls. We did buy a roll of hamburger with TVP in it by accident a while ago and we couldn't tell the difference. Companies will do anything to get us to part with a dollar!

Good for finding a new product your family likes. It may cost more than hamburger, but if it saves a trip to the fast food joint, then it is a money saver.

I eat as little soy as possible, so won't be trying this, but glad it works for you.

Frances-Honestly, I shouldn't be eating it either. It is supposed to be a no go with thyroid problems but it didn't bother me at all. I only ate a few tablespoons but if I crash I'm sure that I will complain!

Frances said...

That is why I don't eat soy, SonyaAnn. But some sources say you can eat small amounts and it won't bother your thyroid. There is a lot of conflicting info. I just play it safe and try to avoid soy.

Frances-What can I say I like to live on the wild side? I'm a dork. It didn't bother me but I still wouldn't eat a lot of it.

you know i eat lots of weird stuff...but when it comes to meat substitutes I actually prefer to leave it out completely and just put LOTS for veggies in it. It tastes better and seriously you won't miss anything!
