Uncle Sammy!

I'm kind of lovin' dear Uncle Sam right about now! How often is it that you hear that?
We were expecting our tax return. It was $1742. And don't say that we should adjust our with holdings, there is no way that I would be able to save the extra $33.50 a week. Real life would get in the way and I would have nothing. Anywho, because I'm super anal I balance our checkbook every day. Habit! If only I was that disciplined with my diet. You know, I'm pretty pleased with how I'm turning out in just about every other aspect of my life except this one. Sorry, it's like I have ADD.
Anyways, I called to check the balance of our check book and glory be, we had gotten our refund. And dear Uncle Sam had tacked on an extra $500. My first feeling was YAY and then what kind of evil trick is this. Was this a ploy to get me in trouble?
But alas, it was not some cruel and evil trick! It was our money. My FIL forgot a deduction a year ago and the U.S. government caught the mistake. Which in its self is a bit scary, why are they looking at little ol' me? Anyways, the money is going to fund the funds! And it couldn't of come at a better time, we were falling a bit behind because of our new "healthy" diet. It is costing a bit more and my monthly budget isn't compensating for it very well.
So that is what is going on in my life.
Thanks for stopping by,
SonyaAnn

Good luck with the new healthy diet.

Woo hoo for extra money! Uncle Sam was kind to me. Too bad I had give most of it to my lawyer. Guess someone needs to help her pay for that new Lexus.

SonyaAnn said...

Jenn(ifer)-It spends super fast though. Boo.
And I wish that I could say I'm super thin at this point but alas, I have no self control.
Thank you for coming to see me!!

SonyaAnn said...

Beth-Why does it spend ten times fast than you can make it? Not fair!
Aren't lawyers great?

Jennifer said...

We haven't even filed our taxes yet. Next week we are.
Hooray for more money but like you said, makes you think Big Brother is watching you.

Yay! It is not too often that people are fond of the IRS, but glad it worked out great for you!

Oh, and I loved the ADD pic.hehe

Yea for extra money. I always love receiving extra money. I never get any extra money, but I know I would like it.

Woohoo! FOUND money! Our tax refund will be about 1/2 of last years. Darn.

Congratulations!

Serendipitous money!
YAY!!!

That has happened to us before...the IRS finding us a bigger refund...but it was many, MANY years ago.lol
Usually they send you a letter first, telling you your refund will be delayed a bit due to having recalculate your return b/c they found an 'inconsistency' in your math or something like that. At least that is what happened in our case. Maybe they don't send those letters out anymore tho b/c if I recall correctly, that letter almost caused me heart failure!lolol

So the extra $500 will fund the funds...where will the other $1700+ land?
Yes, we are nosey.....

And don't let Den get his paws on that $500 for his weekend gourmet cooking fun.lol

Jennifer-Good luck on filing your taxes. It is always a bit nerve racking even if you are getting a refund.
Thanks for coming to see me!

SonyaAnn said...

Sinful Southern Sweets-I know I can honestly say that I have never been cheering them on! A bit scary but it worked out in our favor which is something that never happens!

SonyaAnn said...

Pam-We never get any extra money either that's why I had to write about it. But it was a bit scary knowing that they went through our return.

SonyaAnn said...

McVal-Did you lose a deduction? We did. Anna turned 17 last year but we upped our with holdings to compensate. I know that you aren't supposed to get a return but it's like little pennies from Heaven. You know how broke we are!

SonyaAnn said...

Rene W.-Thank you. It's not often that we get to celebrate found money in this house!

SonyaAnn said...

slugmama-I'm so happy. I'm doing the butt wiggle thing!
We got a letter but it was way after the direct deposit. I couldn't wait so I checked the IRS site and they kind of explained it. And then I went to my FIL and he clarified. I was afraid to spend it.
And yes, I'm funding the funds. You are not nosy just caring! At least, that is what I call it when someone questions me!;)
Den would love to spend it on cooking and maybe a getaway. He has champagne taste on a beer budget.

I'd like to say something witty or helpful or informative here, but my brain is dead today. So I'll just say hi and that I'm glad you got a raise from Uncle Sam. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog..you're a SonyaAnn and I'm a Sonya Lee! LOL

Extra money is super fun! Praise the Lord on great timing too and yes, uncle Sammy as well :)

You know what? Don't bother with controlling your diet- food is bliss! Eat, my friend! EAT.

SonyaAnn said...

The warrior in me-I never catch a break. And when I do its from Uncle Sam, how add?
And my ass screams stop, my friend, stop when it comes to food!

SonyaAnn said...

Annie Jones-Did you like the nice tits? I laughed really hard at that one!
Hope you feel better soon!

SonyaAnn said...

Sonya-I had to stop by just cuz we have the same name. I'm really Sonya Ann but I needed a pen name. So it was easier just to combine it then come up with something witty like sugar tits supreme!

Linda said...

It's always fun to get that refund...
It sucks when the your kids get to
old and you can't deduct them any more but they still cost you a small fortune.... And I think it sucks how it cost more to eat healthy. You know you can get a double chese burger at Burger King for a buck! Is there anything healthy you can eat for a buck?

SonyaAnn said...

Linda-You are dead on! We will be paying even more for Anna when she goes to school but we lost that one deduction. I just wonder if the college credit will make up for it.
And right, the healthy eating is killing us. UGH! Doing the right thing or the healthy thing is never easy?

The warrior in me said...

Heheh- my rear end is kind of screaming too- i just don't care to turn and look!!

SonyaAnn said...

The warrior in me-I know but mine keeps chasing me, the damned thing!

Frances said...

SonyaAnn, what deduction did you lose? You can claim a deducion for full time college students until, I think, they are 23.

We claimed Samantha on our tax return through last year and would have claimed her this year. But her mom decided she wanted to claim. That means she also gets to file the FAFSA.

Yeah, my first FAFSA free year in 5 years!

SonyaAnn said...

Frances-I don't know the name of the deduction. I just know you lose it when they turn 17. Maybe dependent child something or other.
We won't get to claim her college deduction until next year.
And I don't know how you survived 5 years of FAFSA!

Frances said...

Well, I don't know what that deduction is. We never lost any deduction for Sam until this year. Samantha has filed a tax return for years, but always filed as a dependent on someone else's return. Did Anna file her tax return as "independent"?

I don't know how I did the FAFSA for so long either. It is driving me CRAZY that Samantha's mom hasn't filed it yet! I just keep thinking of all the money being given out and Sam is not even in line for it yet.

Oh, well, that is between the two of them. sigh.

SonyaAnn said...

Frances-We are claiming her. But you get a larger deduction for a child under 17. It's not the EIC but as dependent. I don't know but my CPA FIL said we lost something. And we did have to up our with holdings to compensate for this ever allusive deduction!

Frances said...

Hmmm...well, I won't worry my pretty little head over the elusive deduction and you shouldn't either. (We don't want our pretty little heads to explode, now do we?)

SonyaAnn said...

Frances-It has a name, damn it all!
And yes, our heads are pretty! Wub ewe!

slugmama said...

SonyaAnn...what you lost was the Child Tax Credit for Anna. Only dependent children UNDER AGE 17 qualify you. We lost 1 last year and again, we lost another one this year as Holly turned 17.
You still claim Anna as a dependent under your main exemptions tho.

The deal with the Education Tax Credit...you can deduct 'qualified expenses' which would be tuition, books, fees, etc. It does NOT include room and board costs. You can only deduct what you actually pay OOP, not what grants and aid cover. There is a limit of $4K I think per year. The school will send you a 1098-T at year's end, with whatever amount you paid in tuition. Keep any receipts you have for book purchases or rentals to add as those qualify too.
Next year you'll have to file a Form 8863 to take the credit. You can take it for 4 years per child....until they make changes to the tax laws, which they are constantly doing.lol

HTH!

SonyaAnn said...

slugmama-You are like my own little magic eight ball. You are all knowing!
You and Frances should just follow me around and set me straight. I need it but then I think the three of us would just be in trouble all the time. Just the drinks alone might ruin the budget.
And good to know about keeping all the receipts. I'll start a folder.
I really feel as if I can handle all of the college stuff now. You and Frances have been wonderful.
Oh and on a pissed off note, I knew that we would be applying for loans in Anna's name so I tried to run her credit report. Nope! Looks like someone bought a house and car on her social security #. We won't know for sure until they mail us the reports. Just great but at least we didn't find this out when we were applying for loans.

slugmama said...

Some bought crap on her SS#? OMG!
It IS a good thing you found out now....imagine if she didn't have to take out loans and found out when she was 20-something and went to apply for a cc or a car loan or something else??
Wow....
Makes me want to go run reports on my 3 kids.

And yes, you Frances and I would need to buy a bar so we could get discounts on the alcohol.lolol

SonyaAnn said...

slugmama-And this social security thing is a mess. They are in no hurry to help you. And Anna has no idea what she is doing. It is just way too much for an 18yr old. She really doesn't even comprehend the severity of it. And of course, they won't deal with me only Anna. UGH!!! When we get the reports our next stop is the police station. We tried to look at her report but we couldn't answer the ?'s about how much her monthly payments on her house were.
Why is my life always a mess?
And yes, we should buy a bar and try and drink it dry. Hopefully, the bar will have an apartment above it so we can live there and don't have to drive!

Frances said...

I used to work in a bar, so once we buy our, I can mix for us. LOL!

The first year Samantha was in college, I was a little excited about the Education Credit, until we filed. Our credit was $79 because Samantha got so much aid. The next year we had to pay BACK that $79. LOL!

We did not get any credit since. Samantha and her mom think that her mom will get back some huge refund for claiming Sam. It will be a little bigger since she has an added dependent, but she won't be getting huge education credit.

Unless, of course, Sam lost a lot of her aid and we don't know about it.

I don't remember losing a Child Tax Credit, but Samantha IS 22, so it would have been a long time ago for us. LOL!

SonyaAnn, I had a perfect childhood, but can I still be yours and slugmama's sister? My parents can adopt you!

SonyaAnn said...

Frances-We definitely need a bar! The fun we could have!
I feel a little better about Anna going away but since it is still an unknown its a bit scary. But I know that you will help me. I'm grateful for that!
It has been a while since you got to claim her. I just don't see why they made such a big deal about taking the deduction away from you. If it was working and you took care of everything and she was getting everything paid for, then why rock the boat. I would never do that, ever! You have proven that you know what you are doing so why would you jeopardize your child's education. It's just stupid. She must be very selfish. My guess is you will get a call when it is too late to fix! Just a hunch! Do you want to claim Anna?
And you have no idea what it would mean to me to have a parents and a sister. Honestly, I got a bit choked up. You have no idea the void you have when you don't have family. I would love to be in your family!
Much Love!

Frances said...

Hi, SonyaAnn! I just saw your last comment. I know it is harder for you having Anna leaving for school than it was for us. Especially since Samantha didn't leave the first year.

After having her coming in late and being gone weekends and stuff like that, (since she was an adult, you know) we were READY for her to move. LOL!

Sam's bio mom thinks she will be getting a huge refund by claiming Sam. Maybe she will, but we never did. I just hope the FAFSA gets filled out.

You can be in my family! We welcome all who want to be silly and insane with us. (You would love my sisters! They are more like me than I am. LOL!)

SonyaAnn said...

France-OK your statement made me feel better! There are times when I'm ready for her to go. She is always on the move and I feel as if I still need to track her down even though she is 18. I think we all need a little freedom. She has been anything but an easy child!
And I would love to have a huge family. I can't think of anything better. Promise in your next life we will be sisters!

Frances said...

SonyaAnn, we don't have to wait until our next life. I have already made you my sister!

I will tell my other sisters and they will be thrilled! My brother will just say, "Cool." He likes to be cool like that. LOL! (But he is a wonderful brother would do anything for you.)

kado! said...

that is always great! We usually use ours for Summer vacation! I'm hoping we get a refund too, I'll find out next week!

kado! said...

ps. I balance my check book daily too. I have my husband trained, he brings home EVERY receipt...and when the gas pump doesn't give him one he know better than to not write the amount down for me. Oh, I think that is really true love! ;)

SonyaAnn said...

Frances-Thank you! I would love to have family and you poor thing, you have no idea how bad I can be. But I love it and know you will never get rid of me!

SonyaAnn said...

kado!-I hope you get a huge refund. I saw that you could go to Bora Bora real cheap. I think that will be our "when the kids leave" trip!

SonyaAnn said...

kado!-Same here!!! And Anna is trained to bring the receipts back too!
I think that there are a few of us that are related here!
