Fabulous Friday

This is from Cottage at the Crossroad. I love this and I have everything but a few small buckets which I know that I can get from Dollar Tree. Just thinking about working on the yard is keeping me warm. We need to do something, right?

Lying Tooth Fairy

At the end of August, DJ had his wisdom teeth pulled. If you want to read about the holy mess we were in, go here. Can I just say, poor us! That was a mess. Poor Den had to rebuild a motor in the dark. But the good news is the car is still running. Who knew? He didn't.
Anyways, we paid a lovely $720 to get DJ's teeth ripped from his head. He was my best patient out of the three of them. He listened to what I had to say and recovered quickly. Might I even say, he was enjoyable but that took a hell of a lot of drugs to get him to the point of being chatty and polite.
I was on the conference call with Blue Cock Blue Suck when I started getting everything in order for the surgery and I heard the man tell the lovely lady from our doctor's office how to bill us and what we had to pay for. I HEARD HIM.
So I had everything set with the insurance company, the doctor's office, the surgeon and my pocketbook before we went in.
Low and behold, they billed us wrong. The man at BCBS had it all wrong. Fine. This was actually good news since we could get $712 back. That was August and I haven't seen a penny.
I've called the office and the woman that does the bills had a baby and only works on the 15th of every month. So I left a message AGAIN. The receptionist did politely tell me that it takes a while to get both the dental and the health insurance to clear everything and that I should give it more time. Ummmm yeah, the last time I called was November and he had the work done in August. She promised to move my message to the top of the stack. How awesome is that!
The good news is there is only one wisdom tooth in the entire family now and it's mine. That sucker is staying put. I'm not going through this again. EVER. I'll keep my money, my sanity and my tooth.
Plus one tooth,

Gave Her 10 Inches

So what do you think? Really, how the hell does anyone get a selfie to turn out. My hand looks great though.
I really like having long hair minus all the work. Plus, I have the tendency to shed on family members and the cats and on rare occasion, in the food. But since it is usually burnt anyways, I see this as a bonus.
I like it long but oh well, it will grow out. This was the third and last time that I will be donating my hair. It has been years doing this and I want my hair back. And the frugal part of this is that I won't be using half a cup of conditioner on my hair every day.

PS- I just realized that this was the same haircut I had in high school, I wish my ass was the same as it was in high school.

$18        Pinecone research
$56.66 BP
$25      Amazon gift code that I won from Donna Freedman at Surviving and Thriving!!!!!

Total $99.66
So close to a Benjamin!!!!
Now on to the crazy part of my post.....................
So I had this very odd dream about Den and of course, I told him.
I dreamt that Den bought this beautiful mansion and a brand new van for me. He told me we were "set." So I went around exploring this massive and gorgeous home. His parents came to visit and asked how he was going to pay for it and he said I have no idea. I being frugal even in my dreams flipped out and looked for a way to get out of the mess that he got us into. I woke up from this nightmare glad it was over. Yes, over spending in my dreams will cause me to awaken.
So I told him my dream to which he answered, "Why am I always an idiot in your dreams?" I smiled and thought about my sub-conscious mind.
Frugal Christmas and dreamer,

Jail Time?

I always try to help my children, I really do. Anna texted me the other day so upset that she had to pay $30 to be fingerprinted.. She has to be fingerprinted since she will be working in the schools. And she complained that she was broke. Ah ha, I have the solution. I told her to get arrested and get it done for free. I'm so there for my children.
And I don't want to hear about court costs or lawyers fees.
Fine ass parent,

Days of Our Lives-Sonya Style

Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, do I have an update for you!!!!!! Oh and so you know I don't watch Days of our Lives or DOOL or just Days as the addicts call it.
I don't watch soap operas or tv(and that's my fault for shutting it off). Anyways, the last soap opera I remember watch was Dallas. Hey, did you know that they made a new Dallas? I probably won't be watching that either.
And I remember Luke and Laura. Yes, I am old but hey, I was a kid and forced to watch it. Did you know that if I cut my hair short, it curls up and I look like Luke?
If you are looking for something to watch since I have flown off on a terrible tangent and will probable never get to the point, I would start watching Sherlock! Holy hell man, it's brilliant!
Ok where was I? Oh yes, OMG! Do I have a Den update for you!!!!!
Not Den's kid. I think. Bahahaha!
Remember how we got a card, congratulating Dennis on his new baby. And how the hand writing match one of the women that he works with? Hold on to your seat, we think she has a crush on Den. BAHAHAHAHA! She isn't trying to kill him, she is trying to nooky him. I know most women would see this as a threat but I'm just not like that. I find this funny because Dennis never liked her and because it makes him so uncomfortable!!!! The woman that will remain nameless reports Den a lot and we just figured that it had something to do with her wanting his job and jealousy. Well, she only reports him when he talks to other women in the department!!! And it would make sense now that she would try to break up his marriage. She also tries to get him in fights with the guys in the department. Which didn't make any sense to Den but it did to me? She is trying to isolate him. WOW, I understand crazy.

The English folks call these women Bunny boilers. So should I be scared or Dennis? Hey and I had the spice rack in the picture. Hey, did you notice the THO? But I did notice the spice rack first so I'm totally normal. Or would it be titally normal?
I like bunnies,
Sonya Ann

Pot Pervert

How creepy is that?!?!?! And that is how I feel anymore. Crazy eyes are upon me. Remember how Den was a brat and got brand new expensive pots and pans? Well, he has changed into a pot pervert of sorts. It started when DJ used one of the new pans and burned the bajesus out of it. First time it was used and BAM, extra crispy pot. The good news is this pretty much proves he is my kid. I burn water and he takes after me. I'm tearing up a bit.
Because of DJ and the pot incident or because Dennis knows me so well, he has turned into a watcher. He smiles when I'm cooking and then says something to the effect of, "you know, these pots and pans are different, we don't need the heat so high." To which I grunt. If I'm cooking, don't tell me what to do because I'm already not happy. I hate cooking.
I was BOILING water and turned it on high and walked off. I came back and it had looked like it had been turned down. So I turned it up and went on like I was busy. Yup, as sly as he could be Den turned it down a notch. Just to show him that I wasn't interested, I burned the garlic bread in the oven. HA, THAT WILL LEARN HIM!
The next day, I went out to the garage and snagged a few of the old pans out of the donation pile. DJ and I agreed that we don't want to touch his pans anymore.

You can order these from here but its a tad bit late. But if you need a quick Valentine's day gift, just write it yourself and attach a donut.
You just can't think of donuts without Homer. But he isn't really what we want to be looking at on Valentine's day.
This is a much better shirtless man. My Valentine's day gift to you!

Does This Happen To You?

You know that I try and plan for everything, I really do. I also try to use everything until there is no life left in it. Take my vacuum. It sucked still but 2 of the 4 wheels fell off. I used it in that condition for over a year and a half. I saved money but I probably should have spent it on a chiropractor. So I pulled the trigger and bought this lovely vacuum on clearance at Walmart for $29.98. It was on clearance because it was pink. The other models are $59.96. Cheap and pink, is there anything better?
Our pots and pans barely held water at this point. Well, it wasn't that bad but they were so warped that you had to hold them while stirring. They were T-Fal and I had managed to scrub all the coating off many, many years ago. Oh and the lids didn't fit anymore. I'm not going to say that I warped the pans but it might have been someone who's name rhythms with Sonya.
I found a cheap set on-line and was going to get them. Then I did something stupid, I asked Den what he thought about the el cheapo set. He said, "Let's just keep the old pans." Never ask a person that was a chef what set of pots and pans they want. I'm not kidding 2 hours later, he decided that he would love to have Cuisinart stainless steel pots and pans. After that long discussing pots and pans, my eyes glazed over. I had some cash set aside for replacing everything/something/not sure what DJ broke, I didn't care. And he finally found my weakness. If you talk to the point where I can barely stay awake, I'll give in. This has never happened before. But comparing pot by pot, thickness of pan to lip edge on AMAZON, I gave in and said "just get it!" It was $229.35 for the set but I had some gift cards so figured it was fine and I wanted to think about something else other than the depth of the bottom of a fucking pan. Right before I ordered it, Dennis said he wanted copper pans. The set he looked at was $649.96. I don't think so and I don't think you can talk me into that no matter how many hours your blather on. Well, maybe 3 hours and I would have broken. Don't tell him I said that!
And then one thing led to another and I ordered a treadmill. But it was a cheap one because I know that it will just turn into a very expensive drying rack. I know me and I probably won't use it but a few times but I have wanted one for a few years. It was $109.99 and I bet that I can save that much money in a year drying clothes on it. Its a manual treadmill so it won't use any electric and it should fit in Anna's closet.
The problem that I see with us spending all this money is the oxymoron of the purchases. I know Den is going to cook some fabulous meals with his new pots and pans and I don't think the treadmill is going to chase away enough pounds to offset it. Maybe if I vacuum and run, it will help. I doubt it. If you have ever eaten Den's cooking, he doesn't skimp on the calories.
It just seems like one thing leads to another and I keep spending. If nothing else, me and a treadmill should make for some hilarious posts. Sigh, I'm destined to be poor and fat.

Ms. Mechanic

I'm so sick of this button! And I figured out how to fix it. Take a piece of black electrical tape and cover the light. YAY, Sonya!!!!!
No really, I inadvertently fixed my van and DJ's car. No really, I did. I should start another blog and tell people how to fix their cars and be rich. And also, have enough money to buy a new car.
Anna's car is still going strong and started without incident during the cold snap. Den's car isn't creaking but the windsheild is still cracked. It's right in the corner so it isn't a major thing. DJ's car runs like a champ and starts like a dream even when it is super cold. But the check engine light was still on. My van is fixed except for the check engine light and the sensor that fell out of the bumper. I'm getting closer!
I said, "Maybe I will show everyone up and fix it myself." Den and the certified mechanics don't have my mad car skills. So there!
No really, this was a complete fluke. When I took my van in and they said I had all these things that needed to be fixed and then Den complained, they said well its just by miles we didn't actually look to see if it needed it. And then with DJ's car being in all those times and not getting fixed, I really think that they do what Den does and take a guess at what the problem is. I'm so lucky that Den can fix a lot of things. And he's lucky that I can fix cars too. Giggle.
I also, wanted to say thank you to everyone that sent me happy car thoughts and positive vibes to our cars. That may have fixed them both too.
Anyways back to the great news,  the check engine light went off in DJ's car and my van within 2 days of each other. Weird, isn't it?I thought that it was hoses that had slight cracks.
It was just too strange to have 2 vehicles self-heal in 2 days. Maybe when they told us what was wrong with the van(the hose) they messed with it and it started working. But since they didn't seem to actually check anything, I doubted that that was it. The code that kept coming up with the van was that it was running lean. The gas/air mixture was off.
DJ's car problem was the idle was high. It was the same code over and over and every part that was replaced didn't fix the problem.

Then it was fixed. It was a gift from the car gods but still I wanted an answer. And then it dawned on me!!! When the first cold snap hit, I went out to buy some heet for the cars. I ended up at the local auto store. I had a very nice woman help me and I told her that I needed heet. She said there wasn't any in all of Lake county but she had some SeaFoam. My dad used this all the time when I was a kid so I knew the stuff was like gold. It was $10 a can but she said she would price match Walmart and that she would also give it to me with the sale they had going on which was buy one get one free. I really like her.
We added half a can to each car and forgot about it. It wasn't until we both had used a tank of gas that the check engine lights went off. I checked the site and it said, "As a fuel system additive, Sea Foam helps, clean carburetor jets, clean passageways, clean fuel injectors, clean deposits, stabilize fuel for up to 2 years, control moisture and adds lubricity to fuel."
I bet that both the car and the van had some gunk that was making it run lean and the high idol. Both of those codes have something to do with gasoline. How many times does a cold snap actually help a car run better?
How awesome is this!!! I wonder if SeaFoam could fix a window.
Certified,
Sonya Ann

Lost My Mind

From the Devil Won't Recognize You Blog
I thought, "well if that isn't adorable and I should make that" and then I realized that I had this downstairs-LITERALLY!
What's wrong with me? I just don't have fancy smanchy lights in it.
I keep it in the corner to cover up some cables. Cables to the satellite that we don't have anymore.
I used the stick/twigs that I got from the Christmas party center piece. Nothing wasted, I tell ya.
All I got,
Sonya Ann

Challenge Accepted!

Den and I are planning on going to Vegas in the fall. Yay, us! And I am hoping that we will really be able to get the tickets for close to free. The problem is that they raised the cost of luggage. It's anywhere from $35 to $100 for a carry on depending on when you pay(on-line or the airport). A checked bag is anywhere from $30 to $100. Den and I usually get our things into one bag and check it at the airport. It would cost us $60 round trip if I purchased it when we book our flights.
Here is where they have issued me a personal challenge, on the site it says, "Bring Less, Pay Less – Our bag pricing gives you the freedom to only pay for what you bring. Pack light and save, especially if you only bring a free personal item."
A personal item is " (e.g. purse, small backpack, etc.) dimensions must not exceed 16 x 14 x 12 inches (40 x 35 x 30 cm) including handles and wheels."
So I contacted Spirit asking them about it and they emailed back and said basically if it fits it flys. Meaning if it doesn't exceed 16x14x12, its a go.
This ugly bag is what I use to store our gloves in but I thought that it might be the right size. So the gloves got dumped and I went to work. And let me tell you, a mock packing can make you work up a sweat!
This is a picture of all the toiletries that we bring.
I got it all into 3 bags. I stuffed it in the bags haphazardly. I know I can do better with more time. I just wanted to get an idea if it was even possible for us to pack for 5 or 6 days in one of these cases.
I packed 4 pairs of capris, 4 pairs of socks, 5 undies, 6 tops, 3 bras, 1 pair of flippies, a small purse, and one of the bags with the toiletries.
I got everything in there but those two little bags. Then I dumped everything that was mine out and put it back. I'm telling you this was a mess. And then I went to see if everything would fit for Den. I wasn't going to buy another bag if there was no chance of it working.
Den had 7 shirts, 4 pairs of shorts, 3 undies, 2 socks and the 2 bags that wouldn't fit in mine.
TADA! And the cats slept through the entire thing!
When the bag was filled with my stuff it measured 15x10.25x9. So I made it under the 16x14x12. When the bag had Den's stuff in it, it measured 15.5x11x9. So again we were all good.
I think with a bit more effort and planning the outfits more carefully, I could save more space. I also don't think that we would need that many shirts. But I wanted to see if I could get close to a weeks worth of clothes in there. I also need to go through our toiletries. I know I could pare them down a bit. I might even be able to find a smaller purse. I also just stuffed everything in there. I have some mad tetris skills that I could put to good use.
I have never brought this much through security before. I think this is one of the draw backs to this plan. And that if for some chance they decide that they won't let our bags fly, we would have to pay $100 each bag to stow it. I don't see this happening but since I have never tried to bring a bag through I don't know what to expect. I'm also not sure if we could make it 6 to 7 days on this little. I don't want me being cheap and trying to save money ruining our trip. Den might start to stink. Just sayin'. There are a few unknowns there.
The plus side to all of this is we would save quite a bit of money. $60 a trip is nothing to sneeze at. And if we got bumped like we did that one trip, we would have clothes to wear. It was VERY miserable being out there with nothing. Not even the phone charger. And I hate standing and waiting to get your luggage. With the carry on bags,we could just walk out the door and catch a bus. I've also had my luggage lost before. Oh that was a fresh hell, let me tell you. I have also had one of the legs snapped off of our luggage. You would forget that you had to hold it, stand it up and watch it fall over since you couldn't catch it in time. Not to mention, all the dings, busted zippers and one long stain that we never could identify on the luggage that was left in the airlines care. I was watching the guys load and unload bags once and I saw one of the drivers run over a bag that was off to the side. I thought he was driving over to it to pick it up. Nope just wanted a speed bump. And he looked back to make sure that he hit it with the attached cars he was pulling. REALLY?!?!?!
I guess we will give this a go our next trip. We will see if this makes our trip better or worse. I'm guessing that this will be the new norm pretty quick. How long will it be before they start charging for the little personal items?
Would you do this to save money?
Tetris lover,
Sonya Ann
