Makin' It and Savin' It Sunday

Happy Sunday! So who is sober and wide awake?
I'm pretty sure that Den could make us furniture and it would probably be spectacular. I would make a chair and the first person to sit on it would be impaled. I could see it happening. Run or lazily walk over to the Penny Hoarder and read the quite entertaining post on DIY Savings: How I Saved $5,000 by Building My Own Furniture.
Have you ever built any furniture? Has anyone ever been injured?
Kickin back,
Sonya Ann

I have not ever built furniture and I probably never will. Its a good idea but the execution would lack on my side.

I clicked on the link and have to admit I am impressed . I have never built furniture and I am pretty sure I lack the skills and inclination to build. But I found accidentally that I am a pretty decent upholsterer and refinisher. My theory is that there are tons of 10-20 buck used furniture bargains out there that only need a little love, cheap fabric, sanding or paint. So why build? I mean, does the world really need an Anne original whampyjawed table?

Bushy tailed here. Not bright-eyed though as my eyes are still fighting each other. LOL!

I don't think I have built any furniture, but I have upholstered and refinished pieces. I am lazy now, I would just rather buy them finished.

My grandfather was a master carpenter. He never made a living at it but it was his hobby. He could build anything from a chair to a house(and he did). He also built a bomb shelter(remember the 1950's?)and a speedboat. My brother got some of his skills but I didn't. I can't even pound a nail correctly.
But I can sew up a storm.

I think I need to have Frances come here and reupholster my mom's wing back chair. I am scare to attempt it. 8-)

It is Monday here. A little before six in the morning. Sober yes. Wide awake? Cue hysterical laughter.
I like (a lot) other people's home made furniture. Given that I am not safe with kitchen implements (including but not limited to a potato peeler) I am not going there.

We are hoping to fund our retirement this way! Let's hope we can build!

My father built lots of our furniture and two houses and some of our wooden toys. I have built furniture. Okay, I have had help. When we bought our new home, I got a piece of plywood from Daddy, gave it to a friend who cut a circle. I nailed the circle of wood to a wooden apple box. After I made a table cloth that hung to the floor, we had a nice table. But, ex-husband was furious that I told a guest.

I still use that table but I put on legs that screw on.

Upholstery and refinishing were more my thing later on. I mostly scrounge furniture from the side of the road or buy it dirt cheap since it is in bad shape.

I built a blanket chest a long time ago. I joined the wood, cut it, assembled it, stained it, finished it lovingly. Brought it inside and the cat jumped on it. Hubby scared it off and it left claw marks all over the top. I was devastated. I'm with Anne, refinishing old stuff with paint and fabric is a big trend now. I make it look worn on purpose now so as not to suffer that same heartbreak again.

ND Chic-I tried to glue a kitchen chair and almost damaged the little boy that I used to babysit for.

Anne in the kitchen-I think your idea may be the way to go. But I think that it would end up being a project for Den. I would just bring him beer.

Frances-You poor blind kid. I think I would just give up and sleep. I'm kind of a quitter when it comes to not being able to see.
Hey, buying furniture is a great hobby. I wonder how DJ would feel if I made his furniture since his room is next on the list.

sluggy-Sewing is a wonderful thing to do. I do buttons like nobody's business. And that's all the talent that I have.
I think you and Frances would just drink!

Elephant's Child-I have a hangover so hysterically laugh a bit more quietly.
Yeah, I'm a mess in the kitchen too. I wonder what I'm good at.

Jennifer-Bless your heart and post the pictures!

Practical Parsimony-I did help build the deck out back but I don't think that comes close to making a table. I might be able to build a box or something but honestly, scrounging furniture and redoing it is probably the way to go.

We are: Clamco-I bet you were sick over the claw marks. I would have been.
I've been thinking about tackling my old metal folding chairs, does that count?

While I haven't built any furniture from scratch I have reused, repurposed old furniture by turning it into something else. While that sounds really "green" of me most things turn out looking pretty....stupid... so usually end up in the firepit.

Jane-I too, have such great intentions and then it goes sour. We just have to look at it as a notch in our cap for trying. Right, right?
