Makin' It And Savin' It Sunday

We aren't real big food wasters here. And that is because I am cheap and Den was a chef and knows food. It is shocking though how much food waste there is in the US. Jump over to the Penny Hoarder and check out the article, What Do Sell-by Dates Actually Mean for Food Safety? Turns out, Not Much.
I like that they posted the USDA-recommended food storage and handling chart. Hard to believe that government put something out that actually clarifies something instead of making it more complicated.
Anywho, are you a waster or a sniffer? The only thing that I won't use past the expiration date is milk.
Non-chunky milk,

I struggle with this one. I use the smell test but I still waste more than a household should.

I don't chuck anything I ignore dates and if it smells ok and not growing or crawling we eat it lol.

Even with the milk we do the old sniff test. And, if milk sours it is great for pancakes - I purposefully sour my milk (with a tablespoon of vinegar) to make my pancakes fluffier! I found it in a recipe on allrecipes.com and have done it ever since, and no, you cannot taste any vinegar. The other day on $1.49 day I bought two containers of milk not realizing they expired in 2 days. The second one wasn't even opened until 2 days after that and we drank it quickly and there was zero waste, that makes me a happy bunny. No food waste is even more important when you grow your own, after all that hard work it's a crime to have waste. I am a vigilante about my tomatoes. "We have to eat this today, no ifs, ands or buts"

I would like to say I waste nothing but that would be a lie. I try not to and I am definitely a sniffer and smeller and am no way bound by use by dates , or lettuce will wilt beyond salvage. I hate it but it does happen.

There is some waste here, but not a lot. I am cheap and I hate shopping.

I do have some food waste, but I ignore dates once I have purchased it. I decide when food is too old by using my eyes and my nose.

I put chocolate in soured milk and drink it. I wrote a long response here and lost it. So, I wrote a longer post on my blog and put a link to your blog. I posted it accidentally, but took it down and will post it tomorrow.

Agree: soured milk makes the best panceks, biscuits, chocolate cake. We run out of milk FAST here (big milk drinkers), can't recall when it last (if ever!)naturally soured on us.
